A Turkish residence permit (ikamet izni) is required for foreigners who want to stay longer than the visa-free period. The main types are short-term, family, student and long-term; you apply online via e-ikamet and then attend the migration office in person with your documents. Renewals must be filed within the last 60 days of the permit's validity.
Permit types under Law No. 6458
- Short-term: for property owners, tourism, business ties, medical treatment, Turkish courses and more; up to 2 years per issuance.
- Family: for spouses and children of Turkish citizens or foreign permit holders.
- Student: for university students in Türkiye.
- Long-term: after 8 years of uninterrupted legal residence, subject to other conditions.
Key documents for a short-term permit
- passport and copies;
- biometric photos;
- health insurance valid in Türkiye;
- proof of address — title deed or notarised lease;
- proof of sufficient means;
- documents for the specific ground.
Closed neighbourhoods
Since 2022, new applications have been restricted in neighbourhoods with a high share of foreign residents. According to local media, in June 2026 Mahmutlar, Kestel, Avsallar and Kargıcak in Alanya reopened for applications. The list is reviewed regularly, so check the neighbourhood's status on the date you apply and before signing a lease or purchase.
Renewal and refusal
File your renewal within the last 60 days and before expiry. A refusal can be challenged administratively or before the administrative court; deadlines run from notification and are short.
